Today I can't access Google using Chromium. This isn't the end of the world, as I also have Firefox installed and that plays with Google just fine. But it is aoying, as Chromium is the browser I use default; and as Google won't let me in, I can't get to Gmail.

I was amazed at what you can do with a Chromebook. First if you are looking for a cheap way to get a nice light weight, long lasting battery that will run both Chrome OS and another Linux based OS and run them very fast the Chromebook will do all of this.
I took a $100 Chromebook and tu it into an all around machine that is now ruing Kubuntu with the KDE desktop and I am able to switch between the Chrome OS and KDE with a hotkey. Both run very fast for sharing the memory. I installed a 64 gig SD card so I have more than enough storage. I installed all the programs I use on my laptop and they all run great. Here is a screen shot ruing installs from the terminal.

I am able to edit graphics, do word processing surf the web, send emails, and do anything you can do on a $1000 laptop ruing an expensive OS.
This is going to be my travel with me unit from now on. The only thing this thing won't do is run Android apps, but I can do that on my phone.
I did try ruing unity desktop on it, and it runs okay, but for some reason I like the KDE desktop on this smaller screen. (11.6") And by the way, this is not a touch screen so i don't really need Unity. I find I have to tu off the touch screen on my laptop because it interferes with my typing. The focus changes once in awhile. I tune it off using the command:

There are ways to install the full Ubuntu and remove Chrome OS but I like to use Chrome for all my Inteet stuff and use Ubuntu for all my on computer stuff I do. I think I have the best of both worlds.

Here is hoping others will pickup on the idea. It would be great to see a bunch of these being used in a coffee shop near you.

I'm trying to create an install image of server 15.10 that I can deploy to a few dozen machines by ruing through the OEM install, customizing packages and settings, then ruing "oem-config-prepare".

After ruing oem-config-prepare and rebooting (leaving out capturing the image for deployment elsewhere), while ruing through the install steps again, it asks me to manually input the name server addresses. If I leave it blank, resolv.conf does not auto populate from DHCP - even though DHCP is still assigning the rest of eth0's IP settings.

In the OEM install everything was set for DHCP and DNS auto populated, and that's what I want to carry over into the deployment image. I'll provide whatever further info might be needed, but does anyone have an idea as to what's going on to cause DHCP to work but resolv.conf to not populate once I run the install again after OEM prep?

I would start looking for physical reasons why a laptop is overheating.

If we want to keep an eye on what the OS is doing, there are some applications we can install to monitor various sensors. I have installed Psensor & System Load Indicator (indicator-multiload). They both put an app indicator in the top panel which gives us easy access to the information being collected by those applications.

Psensor records temperatures & fan speeds. And it does that for the CPU, Motherboard, hard drives & video adapter. Psensor allows us to set temperature alarm trigger points.

System Load Indicator monitors CPU, Memory, disk read & write activity & swap usage.

Both of these applications can be installed from the software centre and will load at startup,

i have two network interfaces, one is eth0 for coect inteet, and one is p1p1 to coect another computer(win7) directly through LAN cable. I can browse the folder both in win7 and ubuntu, but i caot write/or extremely slow any files..here is my interfaces

Starting yesterday I get an

any time I try to access Google anything from Chromium: gmail, maps, blog dash, even Google forum where I wanted to look for an answer to the problem. I don't have this problem with Firefox or Chrome (for which I got an update this moing via update manager). I compared settings > advanced > HTTPS/SSL > manage certificates in both Chrome and Chromium and they appear to be identical. Now what?

Because of BADUSB attack by firmware viruses (hardware embedded keylogger programs that are build in, straight from the factory, in any device, mobile or not, because there is lots of money in mission critical information from companies). This makes the OS run in a kind of "sandbox", and no keylogger can fool the CPU that it is a genuine keyboard with a human typing code.

Using TDameritrade's trading platform known as Think or Swim ( TOS)

I am getting the java errors I posted at the top of this message when I try and fire up the TOS trading platform On a new install of Ubuntu 15.04 ( I had this ruing for the past 6 months with some glitches but now that I tried to re-install on to new ubuntu install I am having no succes).

per thinkorswims install notes I am using Java 7 and the following instructions to install TOS https://mediaserver.thinkorswim.com/...r/install.html

When i was testing 15.10 in the dev cycle, I started playing with systemd-nspawn. What that is is the ability to run lightweight Virtual Linux Containers as a service. This works even better in 16.04. This is done without a hypervisor, with the Linux Keel and systemd. It is like a chroot on steroids. I see possibilities there, but haven't found a robust practical use for it, yet...

Has anyone else had a chance to play with this?

I completed a fan control indicator for Clevo laptops by reverse-engineering the ECView program (found on some Chinese website). Anyone know what is the appropriate subforum for this? Also is there some de-facto fan control/monitor utility that I can integrate mine into, instead of an independent program? lm-sensors seems dead...

On the terminal it shows messages from the new auto-fan control which is far more aggressive than the builtin algorithm, due to the latter being broken on newer models.

It might be dangerous to write into the IO ports concurrently by multiple programs, as a result it uses information from sysfs whenever possible and also added signal control to prevent unclean exit and have detection of multiple instances, but there is no guarantee this program wouldn't fry your laptop. Manual control on windows did cause the fan to stop once or twice last year, and caused my laptop to shut down due to overheat (but now with auto control it should be able to correct itself).

No support for multiple fans in workstation models.

Welcome. Try this. When you boot from the install media, you will see a purple screen with a little icon down the bottom. Hit a key (any key from memory, but try F6 also if none work). That should take you to the options screen.

In there, you'll see 'Try Ubuntu' 'Install Ubuntu', etc. Hit the F6 key. A pop-up should appear. Choose 'nomodeset' then proceed with the boot and 'Try Ubuntu'.

Get anywhere? The nomodeset method can also be used if you have already installed and are having this issue, just a different way of going about it. Have you installed already and now you get a black screen or you are trying to install and only getting that far?

(PS: We don't officially support Mint here so please stick with your Ubuntu discoveries as we dig deeper, but good to know that the same happens in Mint. If the solution above works with Ubuntu, though, it should work with Mint also. )

not sure if anybody has had similar issue(s)but i caot load ubantu??windows xp 32 bit i believe,windows 7,instructed to access "bios menu"to change boot options,this caot be done in my laptop,no options avail.i noticed in windows several icons
regarding ubantu,but none apply as loading,ruing,installing ubantu software when device is in usb port.to make matters i am still back in the 1960 s as far as knowledge configuring issues!!
if someone could help me,i would appreciate someones time.if need more info,please ask away!

A long time ago I set up an Ubuntu machine to use as a server for my windows and mac os computer which has worked fine with both, in windows I can just browse it from icons and on mac os I type in the IP for the server in the "go" menu.

Getting an ubuntu laptop I thought it would be really easy to access the ubuntu server but everytime I try I get the following message:
"Unable to access location
Failed to mount Windows share: Permission denied"

When going on the "coect to Server" window instead typing the IP of my server doesn't gain my access either.

So what should I do to access the server??
